Celebrating Primary Health Care Nurses Day: Local nurse Lauren’s passion for patient-centred care

04 February 2025

February 5th, 2025, marks Primary Health Care Nurses Day, a day to honour the incredible contributions of over 98,000 primary health care nurses across Australia. Primary health care nurses work tirelessly in diverse settings such as general practice, aged care, schools, community health, and more, playing a crucial role in the health and wellbeing of Australians.

This year, we’re celebrating the theme ‘Treating the whole person, not just the hole in the person.’ This campaign sheds light on the science, expertise, and compassion that primary health care nurses bring to their roles. Their work goes beyond treating symptoms, focusing on the whole person through a holistic, patient-centred approach that leaves a lasting impact on their communities.

To celebrate this special occasion, we caught up with three exceptional practice nurses working in the EMPHN catchment – Tessa Chan (Healthabove Medical Clinic), Lauren Rawlinson (Wicklow Avenue Medical Centre), and Marta Salek (The Hills Medical). Their unique journeys and insights highlight the profound impact of primary health care nursing. Keep reading to learn more about Lauren’s experience with practice nursing.

How Lauren is expanding the scope of practice nursing and shaping future care

Lauren’s path into practice nursing was shaped by a strong desire to support patients beyond the hospital setting. She saw the importance of long-term relationships in patient care, which led her to a career in primary healthcare. Beyond clinical work, Lauren has been dedicated to mentoring nursing students, helping shape the next generation of practice nurses.

“As a Registered Nurse and Nurse Manager, my role is really varied within my clinic. I act as a resource for both nurses and GPs, as well as update the team on any policy or procedural updates. No two days are the same, and that excites me about the role. Beyond clinical care, I have also loved embracing new opportunities, such as upskilling in skin services and offering laser removal of benign skin lesions – a growing service within the clinic,” Lauren says.

For those considering a career in practice nursing, Lauren emphasises the many learning opportunities available.

“I believe there is a unique nature of general practice compared to hospital settings. I would encourage nurses to explore professional development opportunities and to always ask questions, seek out training, and immerse themselves. It is a very fulfilling role in the community.”

Lauren believes practice nurses are instrumental in providing direct patient care, ensuring continuity, and delivering vital education.

“With greater independence and an expanded scope of practice, practice nurses could enhance access to healthcare through nurse-led clinics and holistic treatment models. I’d love to see us play an even greater role in improving patient outcomes across the community.”

Lauren’s journey to practice nursing is just one example of the dedication and impact of practice nurses in our community. Discover more inspiring journeys by reading Tessa’s and Marta’s stories.
