Better Lives For Residents Through Innovative Education (BERTIE)
In response to the Royal Commission into Aged Quality and Safety, the Department of Health and Aged Care provided Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network dedicated funding to build capacity and capability within the residential aged care home (RACH) sector to support residents to access appropriate and timely healthcare. BERTIE training and education package has been developed to support the residential aged care home workforce to increase awareness and management of deteriorating conditions in residents.

Introduction to BERTIE
A comprehensive and evidence-based education package named BERTIE – Better lives for residents though innovative education – has been created to upskill the aged care workforce and help improve the lives of residents.
The informative 20-module package is engaging and easy to digest and is designed to be undertaken at a pace that suits individual learners. Each module consists of a short video, summary sheet and quick quiz. The wide range of topics included in the BERTIE training package cover subjects such as pain assessment, communication, advanced care planning, how to assess acute deterioration, movement and mobility, and palliative care.
Subject matter experts in the project team included sixteen geriatricians, two First Nations clinicians/academics, a registered nurse/health coach and a resident/consumer expert.
BERTIE is free to all residential aged care workers in Victoria and NSW border communities that fall under a Victorian PHN and can be accessed through the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission’s ALIS platform.Â
