The Vulnerable Peoples Vaccination Program

The Vulnerable Peoples Vaccination Program (VVP) is funded by the Australian Government. GP and Pharmacy Vaccination Hubs have been established across the EMPHN region to help vulnerable people have more convenient access to COVID-19 vaccinations near where they live.

The vulnerable populations include:

  • Homebound individuals which may include:
    • People with an injury
    • People with moderate to severe physical or psychosocial disability
    • People with a chronic health issue or frailty affecting mobility
    • People with moderate to severe mental health or behavioural issues
    • People confined to the home
  • Those who are experiencing homelessness, including those living on the streets, in emergency accommodation, boarding houses or between temporary shelters
  • Those who do not have a Medicare card or are not eligible for Medicare
  • People in rural and remote areas with limited healthcare options, including those who cannot travel to a regional centre
  • First Nations Peoples
  • People living in and remote communities
  • Culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse people, especially asylum seekers and refugees and those in older age groups who may find it difficult to use other vaccination services
  • Children aged 5-11 who have complex needs, who are not captured by another suitable vaccination channel
  • Other vulnerable groups identified as requiring dedicated support to access vaccinations

The GP and Pharmacy Hubs may undertake the following activities:

  • Pop- up clinics
  • Promotion and education sessions to local community groups
  • Accepting referrals from partner organisations for people who require support to receive a COVID vaccination
  • Low sensory vaccination clinics and spaces to support people with sensory processing issues
  • **GP Vaccination Hubs accept referral for homebound vaccinations – please contact the GP clinic in your LGA or organise
