The Vulnerable Peoples Vaccination Program

The Vulnerable Peoples Vaccination Program (VVP) is a program funded by the Australian Government, which helps vulnerable groups get the COVID-19 vaccine. GP and Pharmacy Vaccination Hubs are helping vulnerable people have more convenient access to COVID-19 vaccinations near where they live.

Vaccination Hubs aim to increase access to COVID-19 vaccinations across the EMPHN region for vulnerable populations including:

  • Homebound individuals which may include:
    • People with an injury
    • People with moderate to severe physical or psychosocial disability
    • People with a chronic health issue or frailty affecting mobility
    • People with moderate to severe mental health or behavioural issues
    • People confined to the home
  • Those who are experiencing homelessness, including those living on the streets, in emergency accommodation, boarding houses or between temporary shelters
  • Those who do not have a Medicare card or are not eligible for Medicare
  • People in rural and remote areas with limited healthcare options, including those who cannot travel to a regional centre
  • First Nations Peoples
  • People living in and remote communities
  • Culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse people, especially asylum seekers and refugees and those in older age groups who may find it difficult to use other vaccination services
  • Children aged 5-11 who have complex needs, who are not captured by another suitable vaccination channel
  • Other vulnerable groups identified as requiring dedicated support to access vaccinations
  • Those who are experiencing homelessness, including those living on the streets, in emergency accommodation, boarding houses or between temporary shelters
  • Those who do not have a Medicare card or are not eligible for Medicare
  • People in rural and remote areas with limited healthcare options, including those who cannot travel to a regional centre
  • First Nations Peoples
  • People living in and remote communities

The GP and Pharmacy Hubs may undertake the following activities:

  • Pop- up clinics
  • Promotion and education sessions to local community groups
  • Accepting referrals from partner organisations for people who require support to receive a COVID vaccination
  • Low sensory vaccination clinics and spaces to support people with sensory processing issues
  • **GP Vaccination Hubs accept referral for homebound vaccinations – please contact the GP clinic in your LGA or organise

Referral process

To refer a person to the vaccination hub please contact the hub in the applicable LGA according to the individual’s address. All GP Hub’s offer in-reach home visits to homebound persons and are accepting referrals.
