Incidental findings on pregnancy ultrasound: what to look for, when to be concerned and when not to
A practical guide to recognising common incidental ultrasound findings in pregnancy, understanding their clinical significance, and knowing when reassurance, further investigation or specialist referral is appropriate.
Speakers:
Dr Althea Askern is a generalist obstetrician-gynaecologist, who achieved RANZCOG Fellowship in 2020. She continues to work at the busy Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s at Western Health, providing gynaecological, pregnancy and birth care to women in Melbourne’s west. Althea has held positions with RANZCOG and the University of Melbourne providing teaching and mentorship to junior doctors and medical students. Althea is passionate about providing care that is kind, supportive, and evidence-based, so that individuals and families can make informed decisions about their care.
Dr Iniyaval Thevathasan is an obstetrician and maternal fetal medicine subspecialist with a private practice at Melbourne Maternal Fetal Medicine in Fitzroy and a public appointment at The Royal Women’s Hospital. She provides comprehensive pregnancy care and has particular interests in the prevention of preterm birth, the management of previous adverse pregnancy outcomes, multiple pregnancies, and the care of women with inflammatory bowel disease during pregnancy.

- Discuss maternal and family decision-making during pregnancy and birth, and evaluate the benefits, risks and considerations of different planned modes of birth.
- Apply current evidence-based approaches to Group B streptococcus (GBS) screening and management in the third trimester.
Incidental findings on pregnancy ultrasound: what to look for, when to be concerned and when not to
- Explain the clinical significance of incidental and significant ultrasound findings in pregnancy, including their implications for clinical management.
- Describe the management, support services and referral pathways available for women experiencing significant ultrasound findings in pregnancy.
