Depression is not a normal part of ageing, yet it affects nearly 50% of residents in aged care and presents frequently in General Practice. This webinar addresses the complexity of diagnosing older patients who often present with somatic complaints or memory concerns rather than sadness.

Participants will learn to differentiate between depression, delirium, and dementia—the ‘Three Ds’—using clinical history and evidence-based screening tools like the Geriatric Depression Scale and Confusion Assessment Method. The session further explores management strategies, including ‘start low, go slow’ prescribing principles, bio-psycho-social care planning, and when to refer to specialist services. The webinar concludes with an interactive Q&A session to discuss specific clinical challenges.

Learning outcomes:

1. Formulate a comprehensive bio-psycho-social management plan for older patients.

2. Apply appropriate evidence-based screening tools to assess mental state and cognition in older adults.

3. Differentiate between the clinical features of depression, delirium, and dementia (the “Three Ds”) to determine an accurate diagnosis.

Speakers:

  • Dr Michelle Baek, Psychiatrist
  • Ms Tanya Cottrell, Manager, Healthy Ageing Service
  • Dr Terence Chong, Psychiatrist

Supporting Perinatal Mental Health After Loss or a History of Eating Disorders

By Murray PHN

This webinar, focused on perinatal mental health and the impact of grief and a history of eating disorders, is being presented in collaboration with COPE (Centre of Perinatal Excellence), Australia’s peak body in perinatal mental health. COPE’s vision is a connected, informed and empowered community that supports women and their families to achieve strong and enduring mental health during pregnancy and the year following birth. This webinar is also supported by PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia), who focus on supporting parents and families during pregnancy, and throughout the first year of parenthood. This webinar will explore the experience of Nadia, a fictitious case study. At 22 weeks into her pregnancy, Nadia is experiencing persistent worry about her pregnancy and the health of her baby, having previously experienced a miscarriage at 19 weeks. Our panel will share insights and approaches to supporting clients experiencing mental health challenges, grief and bereavement during the perinatal period and navigating the effects of a history of an eating disorder in care. Attend this webinar to develop your understanding of common perinatal mental health presentations, and how to recognise them. Through the webinar, you will explore how past grief and a history of eating disorders can influence perinatal mental health. You will also strengthen your trauma-informed, person-centred communication strategies in clinical practice.
