Support stroke awareness this National Stroke Week

07 August 2026

National Stroke Week (3-9 August) is a reminder that recognising the signs of stroke and acting quickly can save lives.

This year’s theme, F.A.S.T. heroes, celebrates the family members, friends, colleagues, health professionals and bystanders who recognise the signs of stroke and call an ambulance without delay.

Stroke is a medical emergency. Early recognition and treatment can significantly improve outcomes, reducing the risk of death and long-term disability.

Know the signs. Act F.A.S.T.

F.A.S.T. highlights the three most common signs of stroke (Face drooping, Arm weakness, and Speech difficulty) and emphasises the importance of Time when it comes to recognising and treating a stroke. A stroke is always a medical emergency.

  • Face: Has their face drooped on one side?
  • Arms: Can they lift both arms?
  • Speech: Is their speech slurred or difficult to understand?
  • Time: Time is critical. Call 000 immediately.

Prompt action can help people access life-saving treatment sooner and improve their chances of recovery.

The role of primary care

General practitioners and primary care teams play an important role in reducing stroke risk through prevention, early identification and ongoing management of chronic conditions.

Many risk factors for stroke can be managed through preventive care and healthy lifestyle choices, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking
  • Physical inactivity

Supporting patients to understand and manage these risk factors can help reduce their likelihood of experiencing a stroke.

Resources for health professionals

National Stroke Week provides an opportunity for practices to raise awareness among patients and the wider community. Health professionals are encouraged to access resources from the Stroke Foundation as well as HealthPathways Melbourne to support stroke prevention, recognition and emergency response.
