16 October 2024
There is an ongoing outbreak of mpox in Victoria, primarily affecting gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Between 18 April and 8 October 2024, there have been 306 confirmed cases.
Updated national guidelines and state resources are now available, including a clinician guide and factsheet for suspected or confirmed cases.
Key takeaways for health professionals:
- Clinicians should remain aware of the possibility of mpox infection amongst other groups.
- Test all sexually active people with compatible symptoms, regardless of sexual orientation, vaccination status or travel history. If testing for herpes simplex virus, test for mpox.
- Presentations can vary and may include lesions (particularly in the anogenital area and mouth but may occur anywhere) and proctitis.
- Check that your patients who are gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men have had two doses of mpox vaccine and encourage vaccination for those at risk.
- Provide the factsheet to patients who are tested for mpox. It contains information about the illness, precautions to take, and post-clearance advice.
