Ongoing Mpox outbreak in Victoria

16 October 2024

There is an ongoing outbreak of mpox in Victoria, primarily affecting gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Between 18 April and 8 October 2024, there have been 306 confirmed cases.

Updated national guidelines and state resources are now available, including a clinician guide and factsheet for suspected or confirmed cases.

Key takeaways for health professionals:

  • Clinicians should remain aware of the possibility of mpox infection amongst other groups.
  • Test all sexually active people with compatible symptoms, regardless of sexual orientation, vaccination status or travel history. If testing for herpes simplex virus, test for mpox.
  • Presentations can vary and may include lesions (particularly in the anogenital area and mouth but may occur anywhere) and proctitis.
  • Check that your patients who are gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men have had two doses of mpox vaccine and encourage vaccination for those at risk.
  • Provide the factsheet to patients who are tested for mpox. It contains information about the illness, precautions to take, and post-clearance advice.
