New guidelines bridge paediatric palliative care knowledge gaps

08 September 2025

When it comes to palliative care, adult-focused training doesn’t always translate effectively to paediatric patients. With approximately 30,000 Australian children living with life-limiting conditions, it’s a knowledge gap that represents a significant challenge for healthcare professionals.

Australia’s first Paediatric Palliative Care Clinical Guidelines address this gap directly, focusing on three critical areas where professionals need support: managing agitation, managing breathlessness, and communicating significant news to children and families.

These evidence-based guidelines were developed through extensive consultation with both paediatric palliative care healthcare workers and the families who have first-hand experience with paediatric palliative care. By taking this collaborative approach, the guidelines are both clinically sound and practically relevant.

They offer step-by-step strategies that can be implemented immediately, helping non-specialist healthcare workers feel more confident when caring for a child with a life-limiting condition. Rather than replacing clinical judgement, they’re designed to provide a reliable framework for making informed decisions when challenging circumstances arise.

Healthcare professionals can access the Paediatric Palliative Care Clinical Guidelines through the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne’s Clinical Practice Guidelines platform, designed to deliver point-of-care support when guidance is most needed.
