Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health condition among older adults and are highly prevalent in residential care settings, often resulting in significant distress and disability. While anxiety is a frequent presentation in general practice, there are effective treatments available to improve patient outcomes.

This seminar provides a comprehensive overview of the presentation and assessment of anxiety disorders in late life, with a dedicated focus on effective treatment options that are available.

Participants will engage in practical activities to observe and trial psychological strategies that can be immediately implemented in general practice or residential care settings.

Learning outcomes: 

• Demonstrate the ability to apply brief psychological strategies to assist patients presenting with late life anxiety.
• Identify and describe the way that anxiety may present in older adults.
• Differentiate between major anxiety disorder diagnoses in late-life patients.
• Consider what treatment options are available for anxiety in older adults.
