Join us for Nurse Skill Share – a space for nurses to learn, share, and grow together. Led by experienced professionals, these sessions dive into key topics and offer insights you can use every day. They are also a great chance to ask questions, exchange experiences, and build supportive connections. Nurses working in primary care and aged care are welcome to attend.

This interactive event will provide an overview of Australia’s four national cancer screening programs: bowel, breast, cervical and lung. It will explore the critical role nurses play in improving participation and outcomes. Participants will learn practical strategies to identify, engage and support eligible patients, including people from under-screened groups, to increase uptake within their practice.

Speakers:

Kate Flynn is the Clinical Education Lead at the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer. Kate is a registered nurse and nurse cervical screening provider, with clinical experience in gynaecology and oncology. She is passionate about promoting the important role of nurses in the delivery of the national cancer screening programs, including improving equity of access for all.

Michelle Cornelius is a registered nurse with 20 years of experience in health care, specialising in sexual and reproductive health and has extensive experience as a nurse cervical screening provider, clinical educator and clinical manager. She works as the Primary Care Engagement Manager in the Screening Early Detection and Immunisation team at Cancer Council Victoria. Michelle is completing a Master of Health Leadership and Management at UNSW. She is passionate about preventative health care and is committed to ensuring access to safe, evidence-based, and non-judgemental health services to all.

Learning outcomes:

  • Explain the role of nurses in strengthening patient participation in the national cancer screening programs.
  • Discuss the eligibility and follow-up requirements for each of the national cancer screening programs (bowel, breast, cervical and lung).
  • Apply practical strategies to identify and engage eligible patients, including people from under-screened groups, in appropriate cancer screening programs.
