SUMMARY:Navigating the GI Cancer Journey: Collaborative Care in Practice
DESCRIPTION:Date\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGP-focused insights into GI cancer detection\, referrals\, surveillance & collaborative care for better patient outcomes. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a practical GP-focused education symposium designed to support early detection\, appropriate referral\, surveillance\, and ongoing management of gastrointestinal disease and malignancy in primary care. \n\n\n\nThis 5 CPD-hour self-recorded program will deliver concise\, evidence-based updates across key areas relevant to general practice\, including inflammatory bowel disease\, intestinal metaplasia\, Barrett’s oesophagus\, upper GI malignancy\, colorectal cancer\, serrated lesions\, and post-polypectomy risk reduction. \n\n\n\nAttendees will gain practical insights into recognising red flags\, understanding pathology reports\, optimising referral pathways\, and supporting long-term patient care through multidisciplinary collaboration. \n\n\n\nThe day will conclude with an open panel discussion\, giving GPs the opportunity to ask questions\, discuss real-world clinical scenarios\, and engage directly with specialist presenters on challenges commonly encountered in general practice. \n\n\n\nLearning outcomes\n\n\n\n\nIdentify patients at risk of gastric intestinal metaplasia\, understand the role and limitations of gastroscopy findings\, and apply appropriate referral\, surveillance\, and follow-up strategies in general practice.\n\n\n\nIdentify symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease\, recognise early signs of disease activity or complications\, and apply evidence-based management\, monitoring\, and referral strategies in general practice. \n\n\n\nIdentify patients with Barrett’s oesophagus\, recognise features suggesting progression to dysplasia or malignancy\, and apply evidence-based surveillance\, management\, and referral strategies in general practice. \n\n\n\nUnderstand the common presentations and red flags of UGI malignancy. Gain an appreciation of the various approaches to management\, focusing on the surgical approaches \n\n\n\nIdentify key colorectal cancer risk factors to guide early detection in primary care. Apply screening recommendations for younger patients at increased risk of colorectal cancer. \n\n\n\nDevelop an evidence-based post-polypectomy surveillance plan by interpreting serrated and adenomatous pathology findings\, applying Cancer Council Australia/NHMRC colonoscopy surveillance guidelines\, and recognising the GP’s role in coordinating appropriate follow-up based on both histological and endoscopic risk factors. \n\n\n\nIdentify and implement key diet and lifestyle strategies to reduce adenoma recurrence risk following high-risk polyp detection.
