The focus is on opioid analgesia\, adjuvant analgesia\, and methadone use. \n\n\n\nMethadone is crucial for pain management in palliative care but presents challenges such as pharmacological complexities and potential cardiac risks. The session provides interprofessional clinical decision support to ensure safe and effective methadone therapy management for palliative care patients. \n\n\n\nKey components of this session include interactive case study analysis and essential knowledge provision\, covering: \n\n\n\n\nOpioid use in palliative care: overview and HealthPathways Melbourne demonstration.\n\n\n\nAdjuvant analgesia in palliative care: crash course on supplementary pain management.\n\n\n\nMethadone in palliative care: Detailed insights into the benefits and challenges of its use.\n\n\n\n\nBanksia Palliative Care Service’s generalist advanced shared palliative care (GASP) program aims to enhance palliative care through collaboration between general practitioners and specialist community services. It focuses on complex scenarios where palliative medicine specialists support GPs to improve patient care. \n\n\n\nThis is the first of a series of GASP events designed to support interprofessional clinical decision-making. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nDr Ruwani Mendis is a consultant palliative care physician and medical oncologist with sessional appointments in cancer services at Western Health and an honorary appointment at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. In this capacity\, she works with a team of specialist nurses and allied health workers and collaborates with primary care providers in the region to support palliative care patients in their homes.  \n\n\n\nShe is engaged in palliative care research and is the Research Lead for Western Health and the principal Investigator in a number of palliative care trials. She also teaches medical students at the Western Health Clinical School.  \n\n\n\nBeing a specialist in both cancer and palliative care\, she has a unique understanding of the issues impacting cancer patients from early on to later in their diagnosis\, and is passionate about the early involvement of good palliative care to optimise quality of life at all stages. \n\n\n\nDr. Chien-Che Lin is a palliative medicine specialist consultant at several hospitals and community palliative care services in Victoria\, including Banksia Palliative Care Service. He also works as a general practitioner. SUMMARY:Patient preferences matter: how practice nurses can support advance care planning
DESCRIPTION:Date\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNWMPHN and Northern Health have partnered to offer practice nurses the opportunity to learn more about the importance of advance care planning and how to incorporate these principles into clinical practice. \n\n\n\nAdvance care planning (ACP) allows people to prepare for a future situation in which they may no longer be able to make their own medical or health care decisions. Practice nurses have the opportunity to begin discussions about this difficult topic and align the goals and preferences of the people they know best. Proactive communication and normalising these conversations are essential. Although some people will not engage\, others will want to know more and even write information down in an advance care directive. This workshop aims to build confidence\, capacity and capability. There will be opportunities for questions and case discussion about your experiences within the session. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nElla Critchley is the program manager of Northern Health ACP. She has over 20 years of experience in the health care industry. Ella is an experienced nurse leader with a strong sense of integrity who effectively and enthusiastically supports clinicians in understanding ACP. Ella She a Master of Healthy Ageing and builds strong\, positive and meaningful relationships.  \n\n\n\nDr Hao Zhuo is a geriatrician and palliative medicine physician working across Melbourne through Northern Health and Melbourne City Mission Palliative Care. Hao has joined the Northern Health ACP program to encourage discussion and understanding to promote person-centred care through shared decision-making. \n\n\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\n\n\n\nDescribe the principles of shared decision-making and informed consent\, and how this applies when treating patients \n\n\n\nDescribe the purpose and process of Advance Care Planning to one of your practice patients\n\n\n\nIdentify the correct Medical Treatment Decision Maker for each of your patients

SUMMARY:Accreditation - common non-compliances in RACGP accreditation and how to prepare for them
DESCRIPTION:Date\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you missed this session in June\, we are delivering it again\, so don’t miss out. Join NWMPHN and QIP consulting in a session that explores the most common areas of non-compliance identified during RACGP accreditation assessments and provides practical strategies for avoiding them. Participants will leave with actionable tips and tools to strengthen their practice’s quality\, safety\, and compliance processes. \n\n\n\nAccreditation is a critical process that drives safety\, quality\, and continuous improvement in general practice. However\, a small number of indicators are consistently associated with non-compliance findings. In this session\, we will examine the top areas where practices most frequently encounter challenges during RACGP 5th Edition accreditation\, based on national trends and on-the-ground consulting experience. \n\n\n\nParticipants will gain insights into common pitfalls across clinical governance\, human resources\, infection control\, incident management\, feedback systems\, cold chain management and risk management. We will provide practical examples\, templates\, and tips that can be directly applied to everyday practice operations to minimise risk and maximise compliance. \n\n\n\nThe session will also cover real-world solutions for common challenges\, such as maintaining current health summaries\, managing cold chain processes\, documenting performance discussions\, ensuring CPR and immunisation requirements are met\, and building a strong internal risk culture. Participants will leave the session better equipped to strengthen systems\, evidence their compliance\, and foster a culture of continuous quality improvement across their teams. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: \n\n\n\nRiley O’Hanlon has extensive experience in the comprehension\, application\, and compliance of health care standards and associated guidelines. She previously served as Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited’s client liaison officer for New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. She supported services across a broad range of accreditation topics including clinical governance\, infection control\, human resource management\, safety and quality\, risk management\, and cold chain management. \n\n\n\nAs the national manager of QIP Consulting\, Riley specialises in the development of standards\, resources\, templates\, and bespoke documentation\, and conducts gap assessments for health care organisations across Australia.  \n\n\n\nShe has played key roles in the development and review of several national standards frameworks\, corporate quality frameworks\, and pilot studies\, and is passionate about supporting services to embed continuous improvement practices. \n\n\n\nWith a background in the medical industry\, Riley also holds a personal interest in mental health\, multiculturalism\, domestic violence\, and suicide prevention. Her approach is collaborative\, patient\, and firmly focused on tailoring services to meet the unique needs of each client. \n\n\n\nRiley is committed to promoting practical\, sustainable quality improvement in health care and brings real-world expertise and enthusiasm to her educational sessions. \n\n\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\n\n\n\nEvaluate their practice’s internal systems and implement targeted improvements in preparation for accreditation.\n\n\n\nIdentify and describe the ten most common RACGP accreditation non-compliances and why they occur.\n\n\n\nApply practical strategies to strengthen compliance and quality improvement activities in their practice.\n\n\n\nDemonstrate how to use tools such as feedback registers\, risk registers\, and incident logs to support accreditation evidence.
