DESCRIPTION:Date\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe University of Melbourne’s Department of Psychiatry Wellbeing in Ageing Team -formerly the Academic Unit for Psychiatry of Old Age- is delighted to invite you to their 30th Annual Symposium full-day event. \n\n\n\nThis year’s group of speakers bring a broad range of knowledge\, expertise and skills from areas such as psychiatry\, psychology\, geriatric medicine\, public health and neuropsychology\, cutting across University\, Health Services\, Government and non-Government sectors. \n\n\n\nEmeritus Professor David AO will reflect on three decades of learning and collegial connection\, offering his insights on the symposium\, the field\, and the opportunities that lie ahead. Professor Lisa Gibbs will share emerging insights into the impact of climate change and natural disasters on older adults\, with a focus on mental health\, wellbeing and cognitive decline. Professor Sarah Wilson\, from the Victorian Collaborative Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing\, will introduce an innovative new AI driven online resource for mental health consumers. Associate Professor Kathryn Ellis will discuss learnings from a new autism assessment service designed specifically for older adults\, including the impact of diagnosis on mental health and wellbeing. Professor Chris Davey will provide an update on current best evidence for managing difficult-to-treat depression\, and Dr Mark Bevan will build on this to highlight emerging findings on the use of ketamine in older adults. We will hear from Associate Professor Leo Chen who will be presenting on Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatments and their application for older adults.  \n\n\n\nOur speakers will address key issues related to dementia prevention\, treatment\, and care. Professor Dina LoGiudice and Rebecca Leahy will outline the outcomes and experiences of DEMLO\, a Royal Melbourne Hospital pilot program that supports coordinated dementia care through a dedicated Dementia Liaison Officer. Associate Professor Samantha Loi will cover important issues in the role out of donanemab following the TGA approval of the anti-amyloid monoclonal antibody therapy for early symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease. Dr Paula Loveland will provide an update on diagnostic criteria for prodromal dementia with Lewy bodies and Dr Eleanor Curran will share insights from a novel co-design study on dementia prevention for middle-aged and older adults. It is an essential but often misunderstood intervention. It is not an unintended side-effect of medication\, such as from opioids for pain relief. It is not a death hastening intervention. \n\n\n\nFor everyone living and dying at their place of residence in Victoria\, General Practitioners are the main doctors overseeing the person’s medical care with multi-professional support\, often in collaboration with specialist community palliative care services such as Banksia. There are some complex scenarios where additional shared-care input from Palliative Medicine Specialists is likely going to be beneficial to enhance ongoing care by the GPs. \n\n\n\nBanksia’s new GASP program aims to consolidate on our bi-directional learnings to enhance care in these complex palliative care scenarios. Dr Patwardhan clinical interests include general hepatology\, cancer prevention through high-quality screening endoscopy\, and disorders of gut–brain interaction such as irritable bowel syndrome. \n\n\n\nDr Patwardhan completed two dedicated fellowships in interventional endoscopy — first at The Royal Melbourne Hospital\, and subsequently an international fellowship at The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh\, one of the UK’s leading liver transplant centres. \n\n\n\nDr Patwardhan performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including gastroscopy\, colonoscopy\, ERCP\, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)\, endoluminal stenting\, and endoscopic mucosal resection of colorectal polyps. \n\n\n\nDr Patwardhan consults in Glen Iris and provide inpatient gastroenterology and hepatology services at Cabrini Malvern.

Dr Sinha obtained her medical degree and a BSc in Clinical Sciences from the University of Leeds. \n\n\n\nDr Sinha completed her plastic surgery training through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2020. She was selected to undergo a sub speciality fellowship in microsurgical breast reconstruction at Queen Victoria Hospital\, UK which is one of the largest centres in Europe for breast reconstruction. Dr Sinha has published and presented internationally in the fields of breast reconstruction and skin cancer. Her current research interests focus on patient reported outcome measures and enhanced recovery pathways in breast surgery. \n\n\n\nDr Sinha has a holistic interest in women’s health and believe that surgery works best when provided in collaborative teams. She holds visiting medical officer appointments at Monash Health and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre\, where she is part of a strong multi-disciplinary team for breast and skin cancer patients.
