SUMMARY:Melbourne National Bowel Cancer Screening Program Dinner Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Date\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttend the Melbourne Marriott Hotel for this in-person workshop with dinner and drinks served on arrival. \n\n\n\nGeneral practitioners\, practice staff and Aboriginal healthcare workers play a vital role in promoting the importance of early detection of bowel cancer by encouraging and endorsing participation in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. \n\n\n\nThis practical workshop explores bowel cancer screening in people who are hesitant to screen. You will engage in case discussions to explore the barriers to screening and some of the enablers that you or a practice team can implement to encourage screening within your practice. \n\n\n\nWe have also designed activities to get your team started on an audit for bowel cancer screening within your clinic and identify practice improvements. \n\n\n\nPlanning an audit is often the most challenging step. We break it down and provide tools to get you started to ensure success. Mini audit templates will be provided\, and a Plan-Do-Study-Act activity will be explored in more detail. \n\n\n\nLet’s work together to help increase bowel cancer screening in our communities. \n\n\n\nLearning Outcomes\n\n\n\nAt the completion of this workshop\, you will be able to: \n\n\n\nOutcome 1: Identify practices that support engaging patients in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program \n\n\n\nOutcome 2: Determine system improvements within practices to improve patient engagement with the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program \n\n\n\nOutcome 3: Identify and apply Practitioner and Practice Toolkit Resources that support mini-audit and/or plan\, do\, study\, act (PDSA) activities \n\n\n\nRead more.

SUMMARY:GP Webinar: Preventing falls in dementia – a primary care imperative
DESCRIPTION:Date\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of Dementia Action Week 2025\, the South East Public Health Unit (SEPHU)\, in collaboration with the South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (SEMPHN)\, invites primary care professionals to a vital webinar focused on reducing falls in people living with dementia.  \n\n\n\nFalls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisations and deaths in Australia. For people living with dementia\, the risk is even more pronounced: \n\n\n\n\nThey are at least twice as likely to fall as those without dementia.\n\n\n\nThey are 2 to 3 times more likely to experience adverse events such as further falls and delirium during hospitalisation.\n\n\n\nFollowing a first hospitalised fall\, about 2 in 5 people living with dementia in the community enter residential aged care.\n\n\n\n9 in 10 people living with dementia in residential aged care who are hospitalised due to a fall sustain an injury.\n\n\n\n\nThese statistics highlight the urgent need for targeted prevention strategies—especially in primary care settings where early intervention can make a significant difference. \n\n\n\nWho should attend?\n\n\n\nThis session is for nurses\, general practice staff\, allied health or anyone working in primary care.

SUMMARY:GP Palliative Care Education: Generalist Advanced Shared Palliative care (GASP) and Palliative Sedation Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Date\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeneralist Advanced Shared Palliative care (GASP) and a relaxing chat about Palliative Sedation Therapy. \n\n\n\nJoin the Banksia Palliative Care experts for the second instalment into the new Generalist Advanced Shared Palliative care (GASP) program. \n\n\n\nPalliative Sedation Therapy (PST) is the monitored proportional use of medications intended to reduce consciousness with the aim to relieve refractory suffering in patients with life-limiting disease. It is an essential but often misunderstood intervention. It is not an unintended side-effect of medication\, such as from opioids for pain relief. It is not a death hastening intervention. \n\n\n\nFor everyone living and dying at their place of residence in Victoria\, General Practitioners are the main doctors overseeing the person’s medical care with multi-professional support\, often in collaboration with specialist community palliative care services such as Banksia. There are some complex scenarios where additional shared-care input from Palliative Medicine Specialists is likely going to be beneficial to enhance ongoing care by the GPs. \n\n\n\nBanksia’s new GASP program aims to consolidate on our bi-directional learnings to enhance care in these complex palliative care scenarios. PST is one of them. \n\n\n\nBanksia Speakers \n\n\n\n\nDr Bonnie Lui – Palliative Medicine Physician and Geriatrician\n\n\n\nDr Chien-Che Lin – Palliative Medicine Specialist\n\n\n\nWendy Palmer – Training and Development Co-ordinator\n\n\n\n\nThis event is for all health care professionals and is accredited for CPD points. \n\n\n\nThis event is supported by EMPHN and organised and hosted by Banksia Palliative Care.
