SUMMARY:Aged Care Reform Update for GPs: New Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards
DESCRIPTION:Date\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAged Care Reform Update for GPs is a 3-part webinar series. Session One will focus on the New Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards. \n\n\n\nThe new strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards\, including a new focus on clinical care and food/nutrition\, will take effect from 1 November 2025 under the new Aged Care Act. While the standards are designed for aged care providers and their staff\, General Practitioners (GPs) are integral to delivering high-quality care to older people\, making an understanding of the new requirements\, particularly regarding clinical care\, crucial for providing effective and person-centred services. \n\n\n\nLearning Outcomes: \n\n\n\n\nIdentify changes to the new Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.\n\n\n\nUnderstand the role GPs play in the new Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.\n\n\n\nDemonstrate how to apply the new Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards in practice.\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information: \n\n\n\nDr. Mandy Callary is a geriatrician from South Australia. She graduated in medicine from Flinders University in 1987 and achieved Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians\, specialising in Geriatric Medicine in 2001.Mandy considers herself to be primarily a clinician – with her clinical subspeciality areas in cognitive disorders\, delirium\, frailty\, and clinical governance. As a geriatrician\, she has provided medical assessment and care to older people wherever they be\, including in their homes\, in residential aged care facilities\, and in the hospital and wider healthcare systems.Mandy also values her 20-year experience as an aged care board member\, as it has provided her considerable insights into how the aged care sector operates\, how it conducts itself\, and how\, in her new role as Chief Clinical Advisor\, she could best support the sector to improve the health\, wellbeing\, and quality of life of older people receiving aged care services. \n\n\n\nKim Ford is an experienced health executive and registered nurse with over 40 years in the healthcare sector\, specialising in aged care reform\, telehealth innovation\, and system-wide service transformation. Recognised for driving performance\, building collaborative partnerships\, and delivering strategic solutions that improve outcomes for older Tasmanians. Proven ability to lead complex change\, influence policy\, and deliver results in dynamic environments.

SUMMARY:GP Palliative Care Education: Generalist Advanced Shared Palliative care (GASP) and Palliative Sedation Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Date\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeneralist Advanced Shared Palliative care (GASP) and a relaxing chat about Palliative Sedation Therapy. \n\n\n\nJoin the Banksia Palliative Care experts for the second instalment into the new Generalist Advanced Shared Palliative care (GASP) program. \n\n\n\nPalliative Sedation Therapy (PST) is the monitored proportional use of medications intended to reduce consciousness with the aim to relieve refractory suffering in patients with life-limiting disease. It is an essential but often misunderstood intervention. It is not an unintended side-effect of medication\, such as from opioids for pain relief. It is not a death hastening intervention. \n\n\n\nFor everyone living and dying at their place of residence in Victoria\, General Practitioners are the main doctors overseeing the person’s medical care with multi-professional support\, often in collaboration with specialist community palliative care services such as Banksia. There are some complex scenarios where additional shared-care input from Palliative Medicine Specialists is likely going to be beneficial to enhance ongoing care by the GPs. \n\n\n\nBanksia’s new GASP program aims to consolidate on our bi-directional learnings to enhance care in these complex palliative care scenarios. PST is one of them. \n\n\n\nBanksia Speakers \n\n\n\n\nDr Bonnie Lui – Palliative Medicine Physician and Geriatrician\n\n\n\nDr Chien-Che Lin – Palliative Medicine Specialist\n\n\n\nWendy Palmer – Training and Development Co-ordinator\n\n\n\n\nThis event is for all health care professionals and is accredited for CPD points. \n\n\n\nThis event is supported by EMPHN and organised and hosted by Banksia Palliative Care.

SUMMARY:Diagnostic Challenges and Management of Depression in Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Date\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDepression is not a normal part of ageing\, yet it affects nearly 50% of residents in aged care and presents frequently in General Practice.¹ This webinar addresses the complexity of diagnosing older patients who often present with somatic complaints or memory concerns rather than sadness.  \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn to differentiate between depression\, delirium\, and dementia—the ‘Three Ds’—using clinical history and evidence-based screening tools like the Geriatric Depression Scale and Confusion Assessment Method. \n\n\n\nThe session further explores management strategies\, including ‘start low\, go slow’ prescribing principles\, bio-psycho-social care planning\, and when to refer to specialist services. The webinar concludes with an interactive Q&A session to discuss specific clinical challenges.
